CO3 react to the 2021 Budget

CO3's Chief Executive, Nora Smith reacts to the 2021 Budget.

It is positive that the furlough scheme has been extended to September, which will provide relief to a wide range of charities however CO3 and a wide range of other charities have called for an amendment to the furlough scheme, which would allow vital services to be continued.

The Chancellor failed to recognise the integral link between our economy and the social challenges our sector is working to address.   It is disappointing that the sector’s role throughout the pandemic has not been acknowledged in a financial package of support. For some charities, their income model dissolved overnight and without further government support it places critical life-saving services at risk.

The opportunity to address growing inequalities that the pandemic has highlighted has been completely overlooked, the budget ignores the sector’s role in supporting the most vulnerable in our society.   It is disappointing the budget was not an opportunity to reset and rethink.  Our sector has played a key role through the pandemic and will continue to, however, without additional financial support we are at risk of losing vital services, this in turn will hinder economic progress.
