GDPR Update

GDPR Update
Tuesday, November 27, 2018 - 10:30 to 12:00
CO3 Offices (34 Shaftesbury Square, Belfast, BT2 7DB)

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on 25th May 2018. It is the biggest thing in data protection in decades. It is now probably the biggest risk to your organisation – breaches of the GDPR, particularly involving the kind of sensitive personal information we often hold in the third sector, could lead to fines of up to €20m and more. The Information Commissioner’s Office has indicated it will focus more on compliance than enforcement in this first year and you still have an opportunity to tidy up some loose and very dangerous ends.

In essence, the GDPR is designed to bring controls on how organisations process personal data into line with 21st century developments, like social media, internet sales, mobile data and the cloud. Are your systems up to date to deal with modern threats to data security?

The GDPR impacts on how you process information through your website, how you respond to subject access requests, your employment contracts and your relationships with external organisations that process personal data on your behalf. It greatly impacts on your fundraising abilities – is the information you currently hold on supporters being held lawfully under the new GDPR rules?

The GDPR has been incorporated into domestic law in every EU Member State, including the UK, and the rules will continue to be applied post-Brexit. You need to ensure your house in order. And you need to do it now – the ICO will impose huge fines if you are not seen to be complying.

Fiona Cassidy, Senior Partner at Jones Cassidy Brett, and Claire Marley, L&D Officer at Legal-Island, will help you protect your organisation against the obvious risks. In this seminar on 27th November, Claire will interview Fiona about key developments and what practical steps you and your organisation can take now to minimise your risks arising out of the GDPR and data protection changes.
