Chairs' Forum

Wednesday, September 5, 2018 - 17:30 to 19:00
CO3 Offices (34 Shaftesbury Square, Belfast, BT2 7DB)

The Chairperson in a Third Sector organisation plays an important role. The Chair holds responsibility for leading the Board and setting its agenda. It is often the Chair to whom trustees look for advice, guidance and reassurance on all aspects of charities' governance The Chair also works closely with the Chief Executive and is a public face for the Organisation. To support Chairs in this important role CO3 have set up a Chairs’ Forum which will provide the opportunity to respond to the challenges of the role through sharing experience and expertise with peers, gaining advice and support to promote good practice. The Chairs’ Forum will be Chaired by Sarah Witchell from Virtus Consultancy.

The Forum is open to those who currently, in the recent past or expect in the near future to take on the important role of Chairperson.  It is open to all members within the CO3 Trustee Network.  We see this an important platform to provide helpful information through updates and briefings.

The theme for this forum session will be: “CEO Pay ”

Trustees are ultimately responsible for setting remuneration levels for the charity’s senior staff. Trustees should clearly identify these senior staff, who will typically, although not always, be part of the charity’s executive and/or senior management team.

The focus of the Chair’s forum will be to consider the issue of CEO Pay within the context of a reduced and uncertain funding and political environment.  What is considered good practice when it comes to CEO remuneration?  What are the key factors in determining CEO pay?  How often should it be reviewed?  Who initiatives the CEO Pay Review? Does your charity have a Pay Policy?

These are some of the questions that will be the subject of a wider discussion on setting and reviewing your CEO’s pay.  To set the pay and rewards properly for senior charity staff requires informed judgements as well as adherence to the charity’s governance and constitutional arrangements.
