CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector held its first ever conference in Newry on the (23 November), when over 100 leaders from Northern Ireland’s voluntary and community organisations gathered at the Canal Court Hotel to consider the future role of the sector. The CO3 conference was welcomed to the area by the Newry and Mourne Council who sponsored a wine reception, and Conor Murphy MLA and MP for the Newry and Mourne Areas addressed the conference dinner before the conference delegates heard from Seamus Murray, DSD who announced that the Charity Legislation would go The key message from the Conference was that the Third Sector needs a legislative context that recognises and values its unique role in serving communities and informing public policy. There is an opportunity with forthcoming charities legislation, for the Assembly to formally support charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations and the important contribution they make to a better civil society.
A panel of leading Irish, British and international speakers at the ‘Choice and Voice’ conference provided insights into the government and sector initiatives that have strengthened the vital work of charities in their countries. Speakers included Jane Ryder the Chief Executive of the Scottish Charity Commission; Mary Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics Ireland and Avila Kilmurray, Director of the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland. The Conference is bringing together a range of key speakers from Ireland, England, Scotland and Sweden, together with representatives of the Sector in Northern Ireland.
