The Tories and the Third Sector

Date & Time: Thursday 28th January 2010, 9.30am - 12pm

Venue: The Ulster Hall, Bedford Street, Belfast

Cost: £75 Member/ £100 Non Member (includes light lunch)

About the Event

The Conservative Party's policy paper A Stronger Society: Voluntary Action in the 21st Century states amongst other things it would:

  • Replace the office of the Third Sector with a more powerful “Office for Civil Society”
  • Scrap the Big Lottery Fund and replace it with a Voluntary Action Lottery Fund
  • Simplify the Gift Aid System
  • Establish volunteering as a social norm
  • Set up a passport scheme to bypass repetitive grant application schemes
  • Create a network of social enterprise zones to provide incentives for social investment in deprived communities
So what will this mean, in practice in Northern Ireland? Will it lead, as the Tories say, to a stronger, more vibrant sector? Or will issues currently the responsibility of the public sector simply be transferred to the voluntary sector without the necessary resources to deal with them?  And how will Conservative Party thinking influence their new allies in the Ulster Unionist Party.

Inspiring Leaders II - The Intrigue of Leadership

CO3 is proud to launch year 2 of the Inspiring Leaders Programme funded by Lloyds TSB Foundation NI “Creating Change Programme”. Having focused on the visible “hard” skills and tools of leadership in its first year, year 2 of the programme will explore what is less visible to the eye in leadership. We have entitled this programme The Intrigue of Leadership. The aim is to develop the invisible “soft” skills which are held by the most dynamic leaders which bring about high levels of success in their organisation.

The Intrigue of Leadership is a four day, intensive, non residential programme for leaders of 3rd sector organisations. Participants will all be Chief Officers or Directors of organisations in the voluntary and community sector and applications will not be accepted  from senior managers or other staff members. CO3 will offer two bursary places to leaders of smaller organisations to help encourage those leaders to prioritise taking some time out to reflect on their own leadership. We would encourage members to book a place on this programme very quickly as demand for places is expected to be extremely high.

The four one day sessions will be held at City East Business Centre, 68–72 Newtownards Road Belfast, and will focus on the following themes:

Leadership is Personal – 25 February 2010

Leadership is Entrepreneurial – 11 March 2010

Leadership is Relational – 25 March 2010

Leadership is Political – 1 April 2010

The cost of this programme would be approximately £1100 per participant without subsidy. We are delighted that with the support of Lloyds TSB Foundation NI and Anne McMurray Development Ltd we have been able to significantly reduce the cost of the programme to £395 per member of CO3 which will include the fee for the online MBTI assessment, all course fees, tea/coffee/lunch etc and all course materials. The rate for non-members is £595.

We are also delighted to offer 4 bursary places to leaders of smaller organisations at £150 per person. Bursary places will be allocated in terms of merit and

anyone interested in securing a bursary place should complete a Bursary application form (available from This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and return to Majella McCloskey, Director of CO3 ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) by 2.30pm Friday, 22 January 2010.

Leaders will participate in all 4 days of the programme and will benefit from self assessment using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Step Two profile. Participants will complete the MBTI Step 2 online in advance of the programme. The feedback reports will be utilised as a personal, individual tool for leadership development by participants. The programme will be delivered by Anne McMurray Development Ltd. Anne is an associate trainer with the internationally renowned Centre for Creative Leadership (CCL). Anne will draw on CCL and other leadership research to provide participants with effective learning and development methods. The goal is to support each participant to make a positive difference to their leadership performance and organisational sustainability.
